Holmes files suit in federal court.
Katie Holmes is officially fed up with the tabloids, and this mega-lawsuit proves she means it. After “Star Magazine” alleged Holmes is addicted to drugs and unable to leave Tom Cruise, Holmes’ lawyer filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit this week. But here’s why “Star” won’t back down.
The cover story that made Katie Holmes fume? “Star” reads, “Addiction Nightmare: Katie drug shocker,” followed by the tagline, “The real reason she can’t leave Tom.” The story says Katie Holmes frequently experiences sessions under the influence of the e-meter, an electric shock therapy treatment that Scientologists employ to release endorphins. “Star” reports the e-meter produces “a pain-killing, mood-elevating effect.” A fellow Scientologist is quoted saying in the story, “Like a heroin addict, you want another dose.”
The photos of Katie Holmes that predicate the story present a disheveled, miserable looking young woman with dark circles around her eyes, and Katie lawyer, Aaron Moss of the Los Angeles firm Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman and Machtinger, says the actress has had enough of the press making up stories about her emotional health and her marriage to Tom Cruise. “The average reader (would) understand that plaintiff has become shockingly addicted to drugs,” Holmes’ lawyer says. “There is no other way to understand them. The cover even created the false impression that, but for plaintiff’s nightmare drug addiction, she would ‘leave’ her husband.”
The solution? Slap American Media Inc. with a paralyzing lawsuit. Holmes is demanding $50 million in damages for libel, claiming that the magazine’s “vicious lies about plaintiff, designed to hype the sale of its sleazy tabloid magazine, were calculated to cause severe harm.”

How has “Star” responded so far? They’re not budging. A lawyer for American Media has stated, “Star fully stands behind the editorial integrity of what we have published … The physical effect of the e-meter on its users is a matter of significant public concern and we plan to vigorously defend the suit filed by Ms. Holmes.” AMI also released a statement that included this:
“Star fully stands behind the editorial integrity of what we have published concerning Ms Holmes’ controversial use of the Scientology “e-meter”. The physical effect of the e-meter on its users is a matter of significant public concern and we plan to vigorously defend the suit filed by Ms. Holmes.”
