Drilling Agency Regulators Too Busy Watching Porn and Smoking Meth to Stop Spills

In high school, the kids who screw around fail. Apparently, the same is true for those who elevate to the highest level of government.

A new US Interior Department report explains that drilling regulators preferred screwing around over protecting our oceans and waterways. The report says regulators used computers to watch porn instead of analyzing drilling equipment, accepted luxurious gifts from the oil and gas companies instead of sending them fines for violations, and

In at least one case, an inspector for the Minerals Management Service admitted using crystal methamphetamine and said he might have been under the influence of the drug the next day at work.

Obviously, BP (NYSE: BP), Transocean (NYSE: RIG), and Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) want to redirect our attention away from one of the biggest blunders in history. However, we should rightfully start rounding up all the villains rather than letting these issues turn into episodes of finger pointing and PR sleight of hand.

As we sit watching the inner Earth leak into the ocean at a mind-boggling rate, we can rest assured that both the cops and robbers were literally jerking around together. This is the same reason Wall Street collapsed. Seems we have a systemic issue that will require more than voting fresh (corrupt) blood into office.
